Aside from using it as a spread to make garlic bread to go with pasta, it can also be used as dipping sauce to seafood such as prawns, crabs and lobsters. It can also be poured into grilled food like pork, chicken or even corn.
Making home-made garlic butter is easy. It needs few ingredients and can be prepared without consuming much of your time. Having a stock of garlic butter in your fridge is a great idea because it’s good to have a readymade spread any time you need it. Read along for the steps in making your own garlic butter sauce. There are also some tips and substitutes for your guidance.
1. Butter. The best butter to use for this sauce is the unsalted one. Before mixing, make sure that your butter is soft. To do this, you can heat your butter in a skillet until it slightly melts. Avoid heating it in a microwave oven as much as possible. You can also choose to do it manually by using fork to mash it until it becomes soft.
2. Garlic. Use the freshest garlic that you have. You may start with about three to four cloves of garlic depending on the intensity of flavor that you desire. You may add more if you think you want a stronger taste. Crush, mince or chop the garlic thoroughly into paste. Ensure that there are no chunks of garlic left.
3. Oil. Canola oil goes best with garlic butter sauce. Olive oil can also be used, but it has the tendency of tasting bitter after some time.
4. Herbs. A lot of herbs are available in markets today. There are basil leaves, parsley, sage, oregano and thyme. It is your personal choice what herbs to include in your sauce. Experiment and get the right combination to achieve your desired twist.
5. Mix. When all your ingredients are ready, carefully mix them all in a bowl. Start by combining the butter and garlic and mix thoroughly. Add the canola oil from time to time evenly to make the mixture soft just like a spread. Then, add the herbs and mix more until smooth. Lastly, add a pinch of salt to taste. You can also use a blender to do the mixing.
6. Cool. Put the garlic butter mixture into a bowl and let it cool in the refrigerator before serving. You can also put it in a plastic and roll it to shape it like a bar.
7. Alternatives. Garlic butter sauce can be prepared differently, of course depending on the preference of the one preparing it. Some opt to put a little lemon juice if the sauce will be partnered with seafood courses. Others sprinkle parmesan cheese into their mixture before cooling. You can also try sautéing the garlic into the melted butter. If you use a blender to mix all the ingredients, you may add egg white to make your blend smooth as a cream.
